2-MIN DOCUMENTARY VIDEO COMPETITION

JLfest 2022

Objective

The competition aims at enhancing learners’ objective reporting skills in Japanese and creative video production as well as raising awareness of the community, issues, and challenges.

Theme:「

For this competition「地元」shall be defined as a place: -

  1. where a person grew up or lived for quite some time; or

  2. has grown very fond of or belong to.

Hence, 「地元の空」may be translated as ‘the sky over my native home’.

The story may focus on: -

  1. an aspect of one's native home such as history, culture, art, natural resources, industry;

  2. one's personal experience in your native home; or

  3. the personal experience of an interesting resident living in or regular visitors to your native home.

However, the narratives must be based on facts, common hearsay or actual personal experience. FICTIONS are NOT allowed.

RESULT ANNOUNCEMENT

After deliberation, both the judges and organizer decided to withhold awarding the First Prize for this competition.

UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA TERENGGANU

(1) Khor Kean Kai

(2) Loke Joo Tuck

(3) Lam Jing Kit

(4) Siti Nurul Hafizah Binti Ismail

Trengganu Chinatown

2nd Prize

Tracing the history of the temple and the reason for its existence gave depth to this documentary.  Location shots of Chinese-influenced architecture lend authenticity to the story. A good wrap at the end of the video.

The teamwork in the narration work is commendable. However, the voices were monotonous and lack of pride. The recording of some of the voices was also poor.

EDWARD LEE

ABE YOKO

The video landscape is inconsistent. It would be better if the participants were to show their faces in the video while explaining. Subtitles at the bottom of the video rather than at the top could be better.

Perhaps it might add some personal touch if the locals were interviewed, rather than just depending on information from the internet.

LOH KOK HOONG

A very visualize interesting places, the story flow easy to understand & a lot of message in video.'.

Masak Lemak Cili Api

3rd Prize

SEKOLAH SULTAN ALAM SHAH

Mirza Bin Mohd Zaini

It was fun watching this video. The cooking was very enticing too. I love the opening scene. He stood in front of the name of his hometown and greeted the audience. Then, the camera panned up to the sky revealing the title of the video. The pace of the video was great too.

However, the story lacks depth. Perhaps could have either made a comparison with other curries or talked about different ways of making them (if any). While I appreciated the use of simple Japanese, some of them did not sound natural. And the constant popping up of wrongly used わ as the particle for WA distracted me from enjoying the video fully.

EDWARD LEE

MASAK LEMAK CILI API、

ABE YOKO

Should not have shown the brand of the 'santan' used as it would be considered as an advertising element. The participant displayed confidence in speech and the selection of music background was suitable.

The particle used in the subtitle for 'wa' was incorrect (は instead of わ). The participant should explain more about why he has chosen this topic. Is the food eaten always in his family? Is there any story behind the cooking of this food?

LOH KOK HOONG

Very simple & easy explanation storyline. The story have an informative message & easy to understand.

COMMENTS FROM JUDGES

"First and foremost, I congratulate all the contestants for being a pioneer in this new competition. I salute their courage, ingenuity, hard work, and talent.

I enjoyed watching each and every work. I was amazed at the variety of approaches and techniques used. Ranging from a professional behind-the-camera type of narration approach (used often by most documentary films ) to a more personalised in-front-of-the-camera type of narration (used by most YouTubers). Two opening shots caught my eye. One has the camera span up the sky to reveal the video title. The other tracked a student walking down the corridor and then later zoomed down into his shoes before the start of an interview. I was secretly delighted when one of the entries uses a drone for some aerial shots. However, unfortunately, this is NOT allowed as the competition rules state that only a handphone may be used.

Overall, the post-production work was a bit let down. Perhaps the students were running against time but this stage is the most important. It allows the quality checks to ensure that the video meets certain standards and the requirement of the competition. Poor sound recording, errors in the subtitling, wrong information, and usage of drone videography could be avoided  Otherwise, we would not have withdrawn the awarding of the first prize."

EDWARD LEE

ABE YOKO

"Overall, participants display a fair skill in video production. However, participants should do more research on their topics not only from google but from locals so that the content of the video will be more interesting for the viewers. Participants should also plan a better storyboard so that the message can be delivered to the viewers efficiently."

LOH KOK HOONG

"Each group had done a great job. All videos show individualistic interest points such as history, tourism, and food to introduce their hometown. Very creative and interesting"
