JLfest 2022

Objective

The competition aims at enhancing the narrative and creativity skills of Japanese language learners by cultivating their interest in reading and retelling stories as well as their appreciation for the language and the art of KAMISHIBAI.

It also encourages the learners to visualise the scenes and the characters of the story they read by illustrating them.

The Story:「

Retell the story 「海の夏」in e-KAMISHIBAI by

  1. making illustrations of the key scenes;

  2. craft an interesting end to the story; and

  3. record the story on video using PowerPoint.

The story is taken from the storybook 「風借り Short Stories for Young Adult Nihongo-jin」by Edward Lee Chee Peng.

SMK ISKANDAR SHAH

2nd Prize

The illustrations were simple and beautifully drawn. They riveted me to the story. The narrator also tried her very best in narrating the story.  However, her monotonous narration, coupled with poor sound recording distracted me from enjoying the story fully.

I wish the team would have spent a bit more time brainstorming a more creative ending to the story and had their Japanese script checked by their sensei or a native speaker.  After all, this is a storytelling competition.

EDWARD LEE

MARUTANI SHINOBU

Creative illustrations. Need to concentrate on pronunciation.

NIRMALA BELETAMBI

3rd Prize

The personality of the narrator added warmth to the story. Using body gestures and body percussion was great as he tried to create interest in the strong. However, I wish his gestures could be louder and more engaging. He has a great voice but did not deliver the story fluently.

The illustrations were interesting, although I felt they have some resemblance to some anime characters. Zooming in and out of the illustrations is a very good technique to entice the audience. But, there were some scenes that were wrongly used, and thus, contradicted the focus or flow of the story. Lastly, I was disappointed that the visual interpretation of the transportation did not resemble what was described in the text.

COMMENTS FROM JUDGES

"My congratulations to all the contestants for being a pioneer in this new competition. Your courage, ingenuity, hard work, and talent are very much admired.

I never failed to be pleasantly surprised by my readers' rich visual interpretation of the stories I wrote. 「海の夏」is one of them. Your illustrations gave me a glimpse of how my main characters appear in your mind. Thank you very much for sharing that with me.

Most entries have interpreted the story well with great illustrations. It was also a pleasure to learn of a variety of ending to the stories. One even has a moral value in it!

The performance of the storyteller is very important as he or she brings life to the story and helps the audience to imagine. Not only the narrator must speak fluently and convincingly but must also try to use some body language confidently to 'bring' the audience into the story. Hence, instead of shouting aloud or reading monotonously, the narrator must 'talk' to the audience. Lastly, it was a pity that in most videos, the narrator's screen covered part of the illustrations. Hence, perhaps it would be good to plan where you want the narrator's screen to be before you draw."
